Have you noticed the water usage on your water bill is higher than normal?

Maybe you hear water running all the time, but don't know where it's coming from.

You may have a water leak.  It is very possible to have a water leak but not see the evidence until it is too late.  Early detection of a water leak can save you money and avert potential disaster.

Did you know, you can check for leaks using your water meter? The folks at KMP put together this step by step guide just for you:

1: Turn off all water using appliances

Turn off all appliances using water in the house.  Don’t flush any toilets or wash dishes during this test.

2: Locate your water meter

It is typically located at the front of your property close to the street. If you don't see it, walk the parameter of your property line.

3: Check your water meter

Your water meter will have a small triangle on the display. This flow indicator triangle rotates slowly.  If you see the triangle moving even though you are not using any water – you have a leak.  Some leaks are intermittent so it is a good idea to watch the triangle for a few minutes.

4: Write down the number on the dial

Write down the number on the dial. You are going to use this as a comparison.

5: Wait 4 hours

Wait 4 hours without water usage. Grab a bite to eat, or go get your hair done. (whatever you do, don't use any water in the house) When you get home, check the number on the dial.  If that number has risen – you may have a water leak.

6: inside or outside leak?

If you have determined you have a water leak, the next step is to figure out if it is inside or outside your house. This is easy to do :
  • Find your main water shut off valve and turn it off. Main water valves are usually located right next to the meter.  (Need help? Check out this video: How to shut off your water main)
  • Check the meter and write down the number on the number on the dial.
  • Wait 10 minutes.
  • If you don’t see any movement, the leak is outside your house.
  • If you do see movement on the meter this indicates the leak is inside your home.

Now it is time to find that leak.  We have some great blog posts on how to check your home appliances and sinks for leaks.
